32 Years After Declaring Harmonisme
Korean Magnate, Shoulder to Shoulder with the World's Top Artists
Kim
Nam Soo I Art Critic
|
Artist KimSou(90),
in the 32nd year of declaring Harmonisme, has pursued a lonely and noble
path of art all his life, and living a life full of ups and downs, he
became the witness of art history who has immensely contributed to creative
development of Korean art and a magnate at the top of our history. Harmonisme,
which was created by him for the first time on Earth in 21st century,
is unfortunately more highly evaluated in developed countries such as
America, France, Europe and Russia rather than Korea. He is already an
extremely famous worldwide artist to lay a fault at the distorted art
feature of Korean painting circles that is stingy in a grant of honors.
His works are now exhibited shoulder to shoulder with Kandinsky and Bernard
Buffet in the world's top 3 museum, Hermitage Museum, located in Saint
Petersburg. We have learned through history that a worldwide artist is
born only once or twice in a century. A worldwide artist is formed by
history and era, not just forming by itself. By becoming a worldwide artist,
Kim Sou is a great patriot to the nation as well as having his own glory.

This column aims to open the new prospects of
the globalization of Korean art by inspecting and focusing on the artist's
art and life in the 32nd year of Harmonisme.
French critic Pierre Restany, who came to Korea by request in 1987 as a
global steering committee member of World's Modern Art Festival held by
Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee, emphasized the urgency of reevaluation
of Harmonisme first advocated and declared by KimSou. He expressed the opinion
of straightening the flow of world art that is partially distorted. At the
time, as a worldwide critic first advocating Nouveau Realism, Restany was
in charge of editing Domus, an Italian art technical journal, and was a
master of critics world who scouted for worldwide modern artists such as
Cesar, Allemands and Tinguely.
KimSou has painted on a divided plane Buddhist images or women images, which
were his regular subjects for the last 73 years, and worked some abstract
image related to the subject on the side. By accepting the controversy of
the concepts of representation and abstract that were fierce at the time,
he found a methodology to harmonize the conflict of both. 4 years later
in 1977, the artist, in order to formulate his own work, he announced 'Harmonisme'
declaration in the one-man exhibition in IMF gallery. The contents of the
declaration is as the following.
Melting of representation and abstract, the declaration
of Harmonisme art
The cosmic dual forces form the contrary extremities.
However, they approach the perfection when they harmonize into one world.
It is not an exception in the world or art.
After the introduction of abstract art, the painting circle of the world
has formed hostile extremities of representation and abstract. While realistic
expression can be seen as being bound within the frame, abstract expression
contains contingency. Therefore, being inclined to one side means that
it is not complete.
As the cosmic dual forces harmonize and achieve completion, two worlds
of realism and abstract achieving harmony dissolved into one piece will
unfold the world of profound formative arts beyond the boundaries of molding.
This is not a sophistry but the truth. When the accidental factors of
abstract in the extremes harmonize with inevitability of realistic expressions,
it possesses broader and deeper creativity of art.
- July 7, 1977, KimSou |
Afterwards in 1981, a young American artist
called David Salle appeared in New York, throwing the American painting
circles into shock by presenting Harmonisme, which was already announced
by KimSou. David Salle became a star, and for 6 years in the West he was
recognized as the originator of Harmonisme instead of KimSou. At that time,
Restany verified all materials of Kim Sou declared in 1977, and took off
to Paris with the materials, claiming, "Alterations are necessary in
preexistent art history theories. KimSou's work must be reevaluated in the
world of international art."
After 3 years in 1990, Restany announced the following. (Summary)
Pierre Restany -
Harmonisme created a new conversion in modern art
KimSou is a Harmonist, like the unique term indicates. In not only his
daily life but also in art, he is a unique existence carrying out the
dialectic logic generated spontaneously like contrary factors in art such
as the cosmic dual forces, positivity and negativity. From such dual cosmic
view KimSou's personality originates. Like Mobius band, the constant and
natural form of existence he provides us in the eternal dimension of the
present..
The dual cosmos of KimSou finds its harmony within the comparative standstill
of time.
-ellipsis- |
¸ð¸°ÀÇ ³ª»ó 76 x 197cm 1977
Finding the breath of human on canvas, that
is the goal of Kim Sou's endless journey. With the endless groping and quest,
he goes through all kinds of changes and finds it.
When he was about to return to Korea in 1979, the fantasy language of KimSou
was on the track of Harmonisme. The canvas was divided into two parts, one
representative and the other abstract. But the two factors were not independent;
they shared a single subject and were just divided into negative and positive
expressions. Positive is affirmative and representative, and is directly
grasped with eyes and painted. Negative is negative and abstract, and cannot
be seen with eyes.
-ellipsis... KimSou finally finds the solution while reclaiming his path.
It is dual Harmonisme. He has found an existent and dialectic style that
can deliver universal message, without denying the fundamental nostalgia
connected to his own style and root-his own Korean root. This theory is
spiritual, philosophical, and more precisely, poetic. KimSou's poetry is
deeply related to his sensibility and its existent expression. All experiences
of abundant life is reflected as the cosmic dual forces in terms of art. |

Patrice
Perrier / French critic
Patric Perrier, critic and editor-in-chief of modern representative
art technical journal 'Universe Des Arts' in Paris, France, said in his
critique, "The moment we admire his work, we are captured by its
vividness. Actually, when two contrary art tendencies are formed, the
artist expresses all his sensibility, and the originator of vital power
is born, raising the most profound side of humans. From this fact we avoid
our recognition beyond some exterior just like KimSou, but must perceive
the actuality of life that is captivated by the hands of the artist. Reading
the declaration of Harmonisme principles that KimSou wrote, I cannot help
but think about the words of Confucius, |
|
Çѱ¹ÀÇ º½ 230 x 390cm 1964 |
'There are pupils of imperfect sages, but I have
never seen a person perfect without principles.' The main principle of this
Korean artist who was 71 years old at the moment is to harmonize the contrary
extremities and to make the duality create the works of the third world.
His work composition evokes mature tranquility. As Lao-tzu said, it shows
the middle path where heaven and earth are combined to get out of material
desires and gain illumination. The tranquility of the Garden of Eden, where
all possibilities are created, form the extreme value of formative beauty
as KimSou freely come and go within the material and immaterial worlds,
and colored and colorless worlds. However, despite the spiritual search,
he deeply perceives all facts and problems of human beings that occur around
him."
KimSou, being the first in Asia and the second after Chagall as a living
artist to be invited to Moscow Pushkin Gallery and Saint Petersburg Hermitage
(the world's top 3 museums), received public favors of the local media and
newspapers such as Moscow Beach Enobaschi, Nijabishimaya (independent newspaper),
Ehopuramipi, Moscow Tribune, and daily culture paper Couranti (clock tower).
Also, in an evening paper of Moscow wrote, "In the streets of Wulfgar,
you can meet a genius artist KimSou. In Pushkin National Art Gallery where
only traditional Western European art was presented, there is an exhibition
of KimSou of Korea. |

Kim Sou harmonizes realism and abstract, creating
his own style, Harmonisme. In the opening ceremony of the exhibition, KimSou,
his wife, and Korean and Japanese ambassadors and Sidorof Russian culture
minister were present, making it a flourishing condition." KimSou truthfully
sought the harmony of traditional art and modern art, which is the harmony
of the past and the present, and something Korean and something global.
He studied and trained in Tokyo, Japan, and lived in Paris, France and America
and held exhibitions. Art critic Shin Hang-sup says in his critique, "No
one can question the formative validity acquired by the works named as Harmonisme.
|
If representation and abstract are two-dimensional
expressions, Harmonisme which combined the two can be considered as a three-dimensional
expression. In the exquisite harmony obtained by coexisting representation
and abstract, it can overcome the difficulty of abstract as well as getting
out of monotony of representation." He also says, "That free formative
spirit, free from the obsession that one must keep on presenting some new
expressions, is the right path to abundantly cultivating work."
Current movement of KimSou
KimSou, enjoying a green old age of 90, has established and award 'Our
Art' Award since 2007. The first award went gloriously to Jang Sung-soon
(western painting). Jang Sung-soon, 80 years old, graduated from the art
department of Seoul National University, has pursued abstract expressionism,
and the subject and spirit of his works are captivated by the completion
of Korean quality that forms the basis of nationalism, which shows the
belief in which his chose this artist. Even if the painting is rustic
in style or not selling well with lack of commercial quality, if it reflects
the soul of the nation with skill or spirit, it is the best for the artist:
this is Kim Sou's philosophy and vital power. Stripes of many colors that
express the colors of the Direction of the Horse, rainbow colors or light
green of Goryeo Buddhist paintings are raising strong sympathy as the
art that sublimates Korean quality. It is Kim Sou's theory that even if
the style or materials such as oil colors are western, the subject, spirit
or methodology of expression should pursue Korean quality.
The opening of art gallery with the contribution of KimSou
As KimSou contributed 20 pieces (no.800) of his work 'love to the whole
world', 'Jeju Modern Art Gallery' of Jeju Island is promoted and opened,
clearing Jeju Island's name of a wasteland of culture and art. In Jeoji
Artist Village, raised to 'Jeju Modern Art Gallery' contributed to the
village in Hangyeoung-myeon, Bukjeju-gun, 20 or so artists such as western
artist KimSou, noted singer Ahn Sook-sun, calligrapher Jo Soo-ho, Jo Song-suk,
Hyun Byeong-chan, literary artist Min Ie-shik, sculptor Park Suk-won,
embroidery artisan Han Sang-soo, current-affair cartoonist Kim Kyoeng-soo
live in it, making it a tourist attraction as it is. |

Concluding Remarks
So far we have inspected KimSou's Harmonisme in various views through all
kinds of writing staff. His work is on the worldwide level, and experts
and art historians are confirming the high artistic quality of his work
which no one can pursue. Suppose KimSou was born in Europe or America. He
has already settled down as the world's top artist, and gained a great deal
of foreign currency nationally. Our art will stand high in the world only
when it gets rid of the lowly nature or self-torture, and protect and cooperate
with a great artist. He advocates that as China has a national painting
and Japan has Japanese painting among 3 Asian countries, Korea must have
our own self-generated art. |
