A Feast of Love, Peace,

Abridged Language, and Image

Written by Kim, Nam Soo / Art Critic

Kim, Shinja, born on Seoul, has performed enthusiastic creative activity in Japan with the motto, 'painting is my life,' and this is her first private exhibition ever since he moved to Japan 15 years ago. She had the first exhibition in front of Myeondaesa(temple) for 5 days from June 6th, as a competent, leading woman artist who served as a director of Shinjeon Art Association in Japan, and has devoted herself only to creative activity. In 1992, she left for Japan, and majored in oil painting in Muya Art College. From her early age, she liked painting, and continued to pursue creative works. She has presented works in various group exhibitions and invitation exhibits, taking the lead of Korea-Japan cultural association.

She won the 2nd prize at Korea Cultural Art Award, and the special prize of Welfare and Labor Ministry at Shinjeon Art Association Award. This private exhibition displayed 51 works from small pieces to larger ones up to #100. The majority of the works featured love, peace, family, etc., many of which are abstract paintings of expressionism taking advantage of smooth line drawing and clear color, and describing things in terms of a broader viewpoint such as One Source Origin Theory(ìéêªì£Ñ¨Öå) and the principle of coexistence appearing in Oriental philosophy of thinking.

Dynamic spatial division and bold arrangement of objects contribute to the excellent view composition, and the canvas management in a broader view such as one-point one stroke is one of the outstanding features. Donghae-Aeji Newspaper(ÔÔúäñò±ãæÚ¤), Jung-il Newspaper(ñéìíãæÚ¤), Ganggi(˪Ðø) Home News, Shinmisul Newspaper(ãæÚ¸âúãæÚ¤), etc. in Japan featured their articles wi the title, 'Kim, Shinja from Seoul having the first private exhibition in Japan.' They praised her highly for the 'abstract painting of lines and colors with the theme of love and peace.' The works presented in this first private exhibition include 'The Rose,' 'The Gate to the Heart,' 'Smile,' 'The 21st Century Peace,' 'Love of the Fish,' 'Dance of the Leaf, 'Play on the Ship,' 'Melody under the Moonlight,' 'Pond of Spring,' 'Lovers,' 'The Deep Swamp,' 'The Festival,' 'Summer Beach, 'Life,' 'The Flower Garden,' 'The Bridge of Love,' 'Drink a Toast,' 'Trip,' 'Golden Love,' 'Melody of the Space,' etc., which all make use of the image of figures, the minimized and connoting language. Curved lines, ovals, metaphorical images, and minimized, simple marks and pictogram embody the theme and spirit of expressionism. Besides, it is found that the philosophical thinking and ideas of the artist such as love, peace, and happiness are accumulated in the works. While combination of planes and lines makes images in some parts, the prayerful wishes of the artist such as humanism are breathing in a way of minimization and spread of images.

For more explanation, the following works of novelist Kim, Gwang-han on his proposition.

Drink a Toast
I once went to the movies as a group when I was a middle school student. The theater was named Danseongsa located in Jongro-samga, and the title of the movie was <The First Love of Prince>, staring as the main character Mario Lanza, a tenor singer who passed away, and the opposite role, a famous singer playing the waitress Kathie. The story of the movie was so famous that it was used in many musicals.

The story goes this way.
Carl Heinrich, the Crown Prince, lost his parents in the early age and was brought up by the grandparents in the dignified Royal Court. He goes to Heidelberg to learn things of the world.
At a bar named Roten Ochsen(Red Bull), a waitress whose name is Kathie is working. Kathie also lost her parents. Now that misery loves company, they love each other, and have happy life together.
However, he was already engaged with Princess Joanna, and the happiness does not last long. Heinrich hears that her grandfather Grand Duke is suddenly taken ill, and goes back to the country. Two years later, he visits Heidelberg again, and meets Cathie, but they should separate part.

Because of the social custom that a commoner and a royalty cannot marry each other, they should break up. The separation shows that how noble the prince's love is and how valuable the love is regardless of the status, class, and everything else.
While Prince Heinrich embraces Cathie in the beer bar and see how much they love each other, university students, who are his friends, sing a celebratory song for them. At the moment, the Crown Prince wishes he could be a commoner, unable to bear the sorrow of parting.
Yes, although the more chances to drink a toast, the batter, things in the world do not alow us to enjoy such joy that much. While some drink a toast and enjoy the moment, condolers might be gathered in another room, and wait for the end of the toast. They might say this. The festival is supposed to end by now.
There are many events in our life. When we are born, others drink a toast for us, and when we are grown up, we drink a toast for others. Those who have many chances to attend pleasant events for their children and relatives must be happy, but if there are people somewhere else who try to comfort their neighbors having bitter moments and alienated from others, God must cherish them more than anyone else.
While Artist Kim, Shinja is painting 'Drink a Toast,' he must have been thinking of two things. Just as the pure heart of the college students blessing Prince Heinrich, hopefully there may be many who are looking for a chance to drink a toast, and think about people having sad, and hard-to-endure moments too. Painting pictures is to express thoughts with the pictures.
When you are looking at a good painting, apparently you are looking at a work of a warm-hearted person.
Lastly, I would like to sing a song called 'The Song of a Toast,' which I enjoyed singing around 40 years ago.

A flower of a pure heart
To whom do I give this?
Raise you glasses
To sing for the youth
And enjoy this night
Enjoy your youth

My love and my happiness
Even in brambles
May my happiness remain
My love
My happiness
