A veteran painter of storm who achieves stardom with
accomplishment of Korean nature
Article. Nam-Su Kim / Art critic
For the present, the important task of globalization of Korean art stands
in the way of Korean artists. The opening of Korean art means that wall
or boundary between each country through art is collapsed. We live in
the art circumstances of world order that it is hard to survive with sloppy
motion or awkward gesture. We imitated or pirated other peoples' works
in the old days that the East and the West had trouble in communicating
and sharing information, but the time of spirited culture epigone comes
to an end. Korean art now simultaneously meets both challenge and ordeal
to survive in the world of competition. In a nutshell, there is no alternative
way to beat them other than the final keymove accomplishing 'Korean nature',
a unique art style, which enables us to coexist with them. We can quote
a veteran artist of Western painting, Byun Shi-Ji, as a representative
artist on active service who pursues Korean nature in the Western world
of! artists. We choose painter Byun Shi-Ji, a veteran artist of Western
painting, for cover artist because he is already widely introduced to
the world together with other famous artists through the Internet such
as cyber-art gallery.

Latest hot news of painter Byun
Shi-Ji
The Korea Development Bank (President Ji-Chang Yoo) held the 37th ADB
(Asia Development Bank) annual general meeting at Jeju International Convention
Center from May 13 to 17. This meeting is an international event called
Finance Olympic in which 3,500 people of the financial world, including
worldwide 70 Ministers of Finance, presidents of central bank, and the
persons concerned in international finance/investment bank, WTO (World
Trade Organization) and ILO (International Labor Organization) under the
influence of UN, participate. The organizers of the meeting made 1,000
'BYUN SHI JI', books of works by the most oriental and Korean artist,
and presented these books of works to the attendants in an effort to introduce
Korean culture and art.
The book of works introduces his masterpieces
using natural features of Jeju, an international city of freedom, as the
subject matter, and it becomes an excellent chance to publicize painter
Byun Shi-Ji all over the world. The present book of works introduces paintings
winning prizes at competitions during the time of studying in Japan, figure
paintings, landscape paintings and paintings of the time he took an active
part in Seoul Biwon group (Chang Li-Seok, Son Eung-Seong, etc.) in the
1960s. Painter Byun Shi-Ji has exhibited his paintings for 56 years as
a regular member since he, as the youngest one, won the first prize at
the 34th competition of Gwangpung Assembly (ÎÃù¦üå), one of the most authoritative
competition community, in 1948. The present book of works collects 40
landscape paintings of Jeju d! yed over the color of ocher. Since many
people want to have this book of works, which is given to foreign guests
as a present, it is told that the organizers of the meeting are additionally
making the second edition.

Korean veteran painter, Byun Shi-Ji, appeared
on the web-site together with worldwide 21 great artists. The Michigan university
gave a question point of web-cyber, 'who am I, what am I doing', for students
to study knowledge of culture. The recent topic is the game that students
by group answer yes or no to the questions on the cyber Internet regarding
subjects of culture or people learned at school. The student choosing a
person should answer yes or no, and should not leak out other information.
If the rest of the students find out the identity of person in question,
another student chooses a person again and receives questions. The team
finding out every person chosen by the facing party wins the game. According
to the data provided by Julien Walters of the Michigan university, people
want to play the game open a chatting room on that day
(3-4 students per room), and decide who first
choose a person in question. The order by alphabet in the chatting room
is fine. The rest of the students start to ask a question as to the person,
a! nd the student choosing the person answers yes or no only. If the rule
of chatting is ¡®thread¡¯, students can ask a question without waiting one¡¯s
turn. Otherwise, if the rule of chatting is ¡®non-thread¡¯, students have
to ask a question in turn. They can ask the following question after hearing
an answer. Answers must be yes or no. If an answer is not proper to the
question, conversation cannot be lasted. The group which first figures out
the problem wins the game. The students make a memorandum of the following
information regarding the person in their work note. In addition, it is
better to write down the list of helpful web site to research good information.
For example, the question point regarding a
painter includes name, sex, nationality, death day, job, genre, subject,
contents, moving, brief history, and other important information. Though
the way of chatting through the Internet is used, it is proved that an educational
effect as to culture is great. There are the following addresses providing
world-web information about artists. There are many numbers of web sites
such as Internet art history (C white combo), the related links of the Boston
university Internet, Encarta France, Encarta Spain encyclopedia, the East
Italy and Germany. These sites are introduced in Dutch, French, Japanese,
Portuguese and Spanish.
When we look into the profiles of persons chosen at this time, worldwide
great painters literally from the middle age to the present age are introduced
on-line. There are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bac, Bosch, Salvador
Dali, Albrecht Drer, El Greco, Kandisky, Frida Kahlo, Toulouse Lautrec,
Joan Miro, Georgia O¡¯Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Renoir, Diego Rivera, Rodin,
Tintoretto, Byun Shi-Ji of Korea, Kachusika Hukusai of Japan.
Painter Byun Shi-Ji appears on worldwide famous Internet site together
with 100 great artists. Paintings by a veteran painter Byun Shi-Ji, an
artist of Western painting, are exhibited on oversea well-known Internet
site together with worldwide famous great artists in 1997 so that it gives
rise to a fresh impact as well as a deep impression on Korean world of
artists.

7 years ago, ¡®YAHOO¡¯, an American oversea Internet site, introduced
painter Byun Shi-Ji as one of worldwide 100 great artists, and it attracts
public attention and interest of Korean world of art. Furthermore, he
was introduced on an American Internet line ¡®Best Art.Com¡¯ along with
Picasso and Van Gogh, and then he was introduced on a French leading Internet
site ¡®www.ifrance.com¡¯ along with Gogh, Monet and Millet. ¡®www.ifrance.com¡¯,
an art site introducing ¡®autumn paintings¡¯ of 17 worldwide famous painters,
was introducing his ¡®autumn scenery of the secret garden¡¯, which was drawn
during the time of ¡®the secret garden party¡¯ in Seoul after he came home
from Japan. In addition, thereafter an American Internet site ¡®www.inter-art.com¡¯
also introduced his painting ¡®Colosseum¡¯ in the 1980s. Like this, during
past 7-8 years, the world of works by painter Byun Shi-Ji has been intensively
introduced through the Internet cyber-art sites of all countries of the
world.
Although this artist uses western materials,
in my opinion, he can arouse international sympathy as an oriental, especially
as a Korean, because his striking Korean-oriented spiritualism is in accord
with the order of the world art. Intermittently or on again off again,
there have been some artists in the world of Korean art through an art
fair, Paris sample market or biennale. However, it is a pity that most
of them ended in an event.
The world of works by Byun Shi-Ji
The reason that his art draws the world¡¯s attention not only within
the country but also throughout the world is because his world of works
has been surprisingly changed in 1977, in three years from 1974 at that
time he disposed of his living in the central world of artists and then
returned to his home, Jeju, in glory to teach younger students at Jeju
university. Of course he must always have potentiality missing his home
somewhere, but at that time, he met the moment of dramatic change that
the subject matter, the object, the theme of painting and his spiritualism
as heretofore were replaced by scenery of Jeju. That was so impressive
step comparing to other great artists settling down to mannerism or one
kind of pattern, and an actual proof that such dramatic transformation
would be possible in the world of oil paintings like painter Byun Shi-Ji.
This was just a fresh impact and became an opportunity for him to rebirth
as today¡¯s artist on the strong! basis of academism or basic class of
realism.

In Jeju with complete sentiment of subtropical South Pole, there have
been own innocent and pure lives, clearly epidemic surroundings and mood,
which have been isolated from pollutions produced by the civilization
of asphalt. Painter Byun Shi-Ji, who has lived in oblivion of busy days
even if his hometown is Jeju, anew found due to his homesickness and affection
that he could see there plowed lows in a field dully curved in a ocher
color, black volcanic rocks having a lot of holes, low-surrounded stone
walls, laxly seashores and sand banks, salty sea breeze from the South
Pacific, ponies originated from Jeju, woman divers digging out shellfishes,
ways formed by piling red and black pumice stones, flat hill areas streaming
from Hanla Mountain, flaming sun of the South Pole, a fishing boat floating
on the far away horizon. All of the sceneries coming in sight of him were
valuable subjects and matters even one of them could not be thrown away.
<¾îµÒ¼ÓÀÇ Æødz Storm in the dark> 45.5 x 53 cm 1991
In truth, the sc! enery of Jeju being seen through his mind must be the
most beautiful one. As a poet with passionate poetic feeling and poetical
idea cannot wait to recite a poem, painter Byun Shi-Ji shaped such poem
concerning a landscape into a painting being fascinated with beautiful
scenery of Jeju. Especially, the image of an old man sometimes bending
his body made by a metaphorical image of his self-portrait, the image
of a lonely man with disheveled hair walking with a stick, the image of
a static person sitting in a sandiness beach or a seashore and drawing
a painting with easel in a spiritual state of perfect selflessness, and
the image of an elderly man hanging down fishing pole, these are all the
self-portraits of himself and also the world of imagination through his
experience. The artist¡¯s sublime desire and the best pray must be concentrated
on these paintings. When looking into such a series of subject matters
reorganized and expressed by paintings, these s! how painter Byun Shi-Ji¡¯s
unique stage and originality in expressive methodology and style, and
he is blessed with his own aesthetics of freedom which does not resemble
any others. If unnecessary redundancy or pancreas is thickly added to
his painting as tedious explanation by chance, the pure nature of the
painting must get damaged.
The fact that painter Byun Shi-Ji appears
on the Internet cyber gallery such as YAHOO as a member of worldwide 100
great artists, or he is chosen and introduced to the world by the web
art sites of Paris or Europe is a splendid achievement of Korean art,
and it also greatly contributes to the country. The problem is that there
are many urgent tasks should done by the country including government¡¯s
abundant investment from financial resources, globalization of Korean
art through overseas expansion by supporting capable elder painters having
potentiality and possibility to contribute in a large way to national
interests based on national policy. That is to say, I think that the urgent
quest! ion of the day is to establish Korean art in the world as the 21st
century¡¯s strategic business of culture and art filled with foreign currency
by giving artists unsparing support through exhibiting their paintings
to the international art fair or listing the paintings to the international
auction market.

Conclusion
In the 21st century of the information age, the business of culture
and art makes sure the opportunity of recharge as an important strategic
business of each country no less important than IT business. The great
scholars of futurology give an advance notice that culture and art of
a country is the paradigm to measure the wealth of the country. Although
we have great history of 5,000 years inherited from our ancestors, unfortunately,
we still cannot break off the yoke of being a backward nation in the field
of culture and art.
We know from historical experience that
only a few great artists are come forward in succession during a century.
It is expected that someday scholars of art history will make a fair estimation
of painter Byun Shi-Ji, who is chosen as a cover artist by this article.
However, I believe that there has never been such a thing as painter Byun
Shi-Ji is estimated as an international artist by the world market and
the world of international art. Though he is a veteran painter exploring
the genre of western paintings, he is a successful artist by seeking for
his own folk-like, endemic and provincial art style, and pursuing Korean
nature as the theme or spiritualism of his works.

The
achievements of the artist¡¯s lifetime
Painter Byun Shi-Ji was born in Seoguipo-city of Jeju-do in 1926. He
went to Japan with his father, and graduated from the western paintings
department of Osaka art shool in 1945. After that, he was a disciple under
Terauchimanjiro of Tokyo, and entered the French department of Francais
in Athens. In 1948, he won the first prize at the 34th competition of
Gwangpung Assembly as the youngest one of 23 years old. That was a total
nonexistent event in Japanese art history so that NHK sent out a special
broadcasting on the air as a hot news for a week. He held the first personal
exhibition at the Shiseido art gallery in Ginza of Tokyo in 1949, and
was an examiner for the competition of Gwangpung Assembly in 1951 and
1952. Though he permanently returned home in 1957, he has still exhibited
his works to the Gwangpung Assembly¡¯s exhibition as a regular member.
He was employed as the dean of art department of Seorabeol art college
in 1960! , and in the same year, he got married Ms. Lee Hak-Sook, an alumna
of the oriental paintings department of Seoul art college. He was an instructor
for the art department of the college of education, Jeju university in
1975, published ¡®Painter Byun Shi-Ji¡¯ through a publishing company called
Yeolhwadang in 1986, won the Award of Seoguipo Citizen in 1994, and opened
standing exhibition room of Byun Shi-Ji at the Seoguipo Kidang Art Gallery
in 1997 as the honorary director of the art gallery.
His art style has changed on terms of every 10 or 20 years. For instance,
his activities could be categorized into three parts as the activities
for works in Japan before his returning to the country in 1957, the activities
for works in Seoul before returning to his hometown, Jeju-do, in 1975,
and the activities for works in Jeju up to now.

The tendency of his works in Seoul was so-called the secret garden party
or the ancient palace party, and a style of academism painting which described
the actual state of nature as a real. He intensively described ancient
palaces such as <Gyeonghoeru>, <Aeryeonjeong>, <Hyangonjeong>,
<Bandoji>, and <Miyongjeong> as a painter seeking hyperrealism
by coloring extremely in detail with the slenderest-painting brush. During
this time, there were colleague artists such as Son Eung-Seong and Jang
Ri-Seok, elites of the plastic arts, who lighted up the Korean world of
art later. He especially published a series of sedentary figure among
several figure paintings. There were <Woman> of 1947, <Woman
with beret>, <Man holding a violin>, <Statue> of 1948,
and <Statue of a square>, <Woman>, <Woman and her lover>,
<Man>, <Figure of Mr. K> of the middle time. At that time,
poet! Jo Byung-Hwa wrote a critical essay after seeing his home-coming
exhibition. In the critical essay, poet Jo Byung-Hwa said that in a simple
and monotonous coordination, the works of painter Byun Shi-Ji show us
the beauty, which displays itself in shine through long distance, arising
from rich poetic sentiment settled down silently, pure light not being
muddy, and the breadth of deep nuance streaming followed by curve of rough
colored screen. That comment makes condensational explanation about the
features and polish of his art coming in sight of a literary man.
